Intelligent P&IDs for Water and Wastewater – Without the CAD Department

A 30-minute session for engineers authoring preliminary wastewater P&IDs — ISA 5.1 compliant, inside Visio, at concept, FEL-0/1, and bid stage.

The problem

Most wastewater P&IDs get drawn twice. Once by the process engineer — in Visio, by hand, as dumb shapes, just to think a treatment concept through and get a number into a proposal. Then again properly, in CAD, if the project is won. That first drawing is real engineering, but it isn't ISA 5.1 compliant, has no data behind the symbols, and can't produce the equipment or line list your estimate needs. The alternative, a full plant-design suite is built for detailed engineering and hard to justify on work that hasn't been awarded. So, the front-end falls through the gap.

Meet Visio P&ID Process Designer

VPID turns Microsoft Visio into a smart P&ID tool. Instead of drawing lines and symbols, your engineers place intelligent, data-bearing shapes — ISA 5.1-compliant as you go — that carry their own tags, specifications, and connections. The result is a drawing that behaves like a database: it generates its own valve list, instrument list, and equipment list and it's reusable on the next project instead of redrawn from scratch.

And because it's built on Visio, there's no new CAD platform to learn. If your team can use Visio, they can build an intelligent P&ID with no drafting background required.

Who this is for

This session is for you if you’re:

  • A process or application engineer authoring preliminary wastewater P&IDs at concept or FEL-0/1
  • A wastewater skid or package builder producing P&IDs for treatment skids and modular units
  • On an estimating or proposal team that needs a compliant P&ID to support a bid

This probably isn't for you if you're:

  • Doing detailed or construction-grade design on a full plant-design suite
  • A large EPC standardized on traditional CAD P&ID tools
  • Looking for 3D modeling, isometrics, or multi-discipline database integration
